KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Two Wyandotte County sheriff’s deputies are facing charges after an incident involving an inmate at the jail, prosecutors said Thursday.
David Toland, 47, was charged with one count each of felony aggravated battery and misdemeanor mistreatment of a confined person. Marcus Johnson, 34, also was charged with misdemeanor assault and mistreatment of a confined person.
Both sheriff's office employees have been placed on administrative leave, Sheriff Don Ash said Thursday.
The incident at the jail, which occurred on Sept. 5, resulted in one deputy being placed on leave.At a news conference earlier this month, Ash said the incident involved an altercation between employees and an inmate but did not provide further details.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation investigated the incident and submitted the case to the District Attorney’s Office for review.
Ash said that an outside agency is currently conducting an administrative investigation to determine whether any internal policies were violated in the incident.
"As sheriff, I hold myself and my employees to the highest moral, ethical and legal standards," Ash said in a statement. "This incident does not reflect our organizational values or my personal values, and I take it very seriously."
